Characteristics of animals

Animals are a diverse group of multicellular organisms that inhabit a wide range of habitats on earth. While there are many different types of animals, some of the general characteristics that define the group include:

  1. Eukaryotic cells: Animals are composed of eukaryotic cells, which are cells with a defined nucleus and other organelles.

  2. Heterotrophic: Animals obtain their nutrition by consuming other organisms, either by predation, herbivory, or parasitism.

  3. Multicellular: Unlike bacteria and other microorganisms, animals are made up of multiple cells that work together to form tissues and organs.

  4. Movement: Most animals are capable of movement, either by swimming, flying, crawling, or walking.

  5. Sexual reproduction: Many animals reproduce sexually, with the fusion of sperm and egg resulting in the formation of a zygote that develops into an embryo.

  6. Nervous system: Most animals have a nervous system that allows them to sense and respond to their environment.
